:: Spring Song for Tulips :: 2003 :: Steel, Bronze, Tulips, Bedding Plants, Granite ::

A s a sculptor, one of my main aims is in creating interactions between plant life and human language. In using the term 'language' I include all forms of expression such as visual, written and musical.

W ith such a long and harsh winter in Finland, I wanted to make a seasonal installation with Tulips ( tulipa) to celebrate the arrival of spring. Raised metal staves with cast bronze clefs and flowers all stand above silver leaved bedding plants to form an all season musical framework.

D uring the autumn, hundreds of 'Queen of the Night' tulips are planted randomly across the site. With the arrival of spring, flashes of green will appear and eventually a cast of dark purple flowers will burst into life and push between these staves, each one signifying a note and a musical sound. Together, these notes form a musical composition, creating a song in their own style, as an overture to the new season.
